Shampoo for Dandruff

Dandruff is flaky skin on your scalp. Some dandruff is normal, because your top layer of your skin flakes away naturally over time. Some people, however, either chronically or as a result of certain triggers, experience an unusually large amount of flaking, which can also be accompanied by redness and irritation.

Excessive flaking can also be a symptom of seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, fungal infection or excoriation associated with infestation of head lice.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes flaky or inflamed skin. The seborrhoeic area may also be red and itchy - that’s your eyebrows, ears, scalp, the skin around your nose, the lines on your cheeks and your torso. Seborrhoeic dermatitis becomes worse in winter and tends to improve during the summer when sunlight relieves the symptoms.

How is dandruff treated?

There have been many strategies for the control of dandruff.

Most cases of dandruff can be easily treated with specialized shampoos.

Dandruff shampoo is a hair care product designed to control the incidence of dandruff by removing the flakes of skin that result from the condition. Dandruff shampoos also contain chemicals to control yeasts or reduce inflammation on your scalp. Many brands of the shampoo are also formulated to help to revitalize the dry scalp and thus minimize the presence of dandruff. Other dandruff shampoos also include a conditioner to assist in keeping the hair healthy and shiny.

Anti-dandruff shampoo
Most people start off by trying a commonly available anti-dandruff shampoo . Anti-dandruff shampoos containing the antimicrobials selenium sulphide or zinc pyrithione are helpful for mild dandruff.
They are widely available and are also active against the fungus Pityrosporum ovale.

Antifungal shampoo
For more severe dandruff, you can try a shampoo containing ketoconazole.

Antifungal shampoo containing ketoconazole provides a mild, yet effective treatment for dandruff.
It is good for persistent or severe dandruff and also stops Pityrosporum ovale.
You use it twice a week to get rid of dandruff, or once every two weeks to stop dandruff coming back. In studies, people who used a ketoconazole shampoo for a few weeks had less dandruff or flaky skin, and less itching and redness.

Selenium Sulphide shampoo

Another treatment that’s used for more severe dandruff is selenium sulphide. This is a chemical that helps to kill fungi. You use the shampoo twice a week for two weeks, once a week for two further weeks, and then whenever you need it.

Treatment can help get rid of dandruff, although it often comes back, you may need to use your anti-dandruff shampoo again from time to time. You may be able to use your shampoo regularly to help stop dandruff coming back. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how often you should be using your treatment

Dandruff shampoo products are found in a number of retail stores. Supermarkets, pharmacies, health and vitamin shops and even discount retail stores are all highly likely to carry several different brands and formulas. While slightly more expensive than regular shampoos, many of the products today leave behind a pleasing sensation to the scalp as well as a fresh scent that is a far cry from the dandruff shampoo of even a few decades ago.
